A formal inquiry has commenced regarding the passing of an amateur footballer who succumbed to a bacterial infection and a flesh-eating disease. Luke Abrahams, 20, a resident of East Hunsbury, Northampton, died on 23 January 2023 from sepsis and necrotising fasciitis. His parents, Richard Abrahams and Julie Needham, contend that deficiencies in his medical treatment, specifically an initial misdiagnosis of his ailment, potentially contributed to his demise. During the inquest proceedings held in Northampton, Anne Pember, who serves as the senior coroner for Northamptonshire, declared that Mr. Abrahams’ death was due to “natural causes” and postponed the session until the following year. This formal investigation is taking place almost two years subsequent to Mr. Abrahams’ death and was initiated following Ms. Pember’s receipt of correspondence from the Abrahams family. Initially, Mr. Abrahams’ general practitioner diagnosed him with tonsillitis, and subsequently with sciatica, as he experienced leg pains during the subsequent week. On 22 January, he was transported to a hospital, where the complete severity of his condition was ultimately identified. His leg underwent amputation in an attempt to preserve his life, but he passed away thereafter. At the time of his passing, Mr. Abrahams’ death was officially documented as being from “natural causes,” and no inquest was conducted. A subsequent serious incident inquiry conducted by the East Midlands Ambulance Service Trust determined that the responding crew did not adhere to established guidelines and policies. The inquiry concluded that Mr. Abrahams exhibited symptoms that ought to have been assigned a red score, signifying an immediately life-threatening condition. Furthermore, the investigation characterized the decision not to transport Mr. Abrahams to the hospital as a “missed opportunity” to obtain additional medical assistance, which might have averted “deterioration”. Ms. Pember additionally verified that the body had been released. The inquest proceedings have been postponed until 22 May 2025.
