A care facility has initiated a request for birthday cards to commemorate the 101st birthday of a centenarian, an ardent football enthusiast, who endured the bombing of a Merchant Navy vessel during World War Two. John Cunningham, born on December 14, 1923, has been a devoted supporter of Manchester City since he attended his inaugural match at six years old. De Brook Lodge, his care residence located in Flixton, near Manchester, has requested that individuals send cards for the “perfect gentleman” to help him “fill his day with lots of love and laughter.” In 1943, Mr. Cunningham served aboard the Ocean Peace cargo ship, which was attacked by enemy aircraft and subsequently sank in the Mediterranean Sea. The care facility stated its desire to display 101 cards for the father-of-our, ensuring he has “one for every year of his incredible life.” Mr. Cunningham, who plans to celebrate his significant birthday with relatives and acquaintances, expressed his birthday wish: “to be able to meet my favourite player Erling Haaland at the Etihad stadium and score a goal against him.” He maintained a season ticket and was a member of the Manchester City Social Club until he reached his late 80s. Danielle Aikenhead, a manager at the residence, commented: “To mark this amazing milestone birthday, we’re rallying together to get John at least 101 birthday cards – one for every year of his incredible life.” She added, “It would mean so much to John, reading the well wishes and messages from others in the local community.”
