Significant disruptions to train services operating between London Paddington, Heathrow Airport, and Reading have occurred, attributed to a track defect and a lack of signalling personnel. According to National Rail’s passenger information website, services provided by the Elizabeth line, Great Western Railway, and Heathrow Express are experiencing impacts. Specifically, Elizabeth line services to Heathrow Terminal 5 have been halted, and trains traveling between Paddington and Reading face potential cancellations or delays, with these issues anticipated to persist until the close of Tuesday. Initially, no trains could operate between Heathrow Airport and London Paddington; however, the route was subsequently reinstated for Heathrow Express, albeit with a limited schedule. Additionally, a reduced Elizabeth line service is now operating to Heathrow Terminal 4. Network Rail reported that engineers identified the track defect on the high-speed line heading towards Paddington, specifically in the Acton area of west London. This defect, they stated, restricted train speeds, leading to delays. The organization further indicated that the track would be monitored continuously “to ensure trains continue to travel safely” until its replacement, and issued an apology to passengers for the inconvenience caused. Network Rail also confirmed that an illness affecting a signalling staff member contributed to additional delays, though a substitute employee has since been secured.
