A road located in Guernsey is slated to stay closed until the next calendar year following a ruptured water main. Guernsey Water announced that Rue Marquand in St Andrew has been inaccessible since early December and is expected to continue its closure into the spring season. The utility company indicated that this measure is essential to secure water supplies and enable the water main’s modernization. The planned upgrade is scheduled to commence only after the renovation of St Saviour’s water treatment facility, which is projected for completion in early 2025. Jon Holt, operations manager at Guernsey Water, stated: “Regrettably, we are unable to start works to replace the main in Rue Marquand until works at St Saviour’s are complete, our priority is to ensure security of water supply.” He continued: “This main is a major water transfer route, feeding our treated water storage facility in Forest Road and customers in the southern parishes.” Holt further noted: “Our teams have already carried out a temporary repair of a 15m section of the pipe.” He added: “Unfortunately, with an additional 65m of road damaged by the burst, temporarily resurfacing the road would put additional strain on the pipework.” He cautioned that this scenario could result in a subsequent burst, which “would prove problematic” if the St Saviour’s facility remained non-operational. The company also mentioned that the current main, originally installed in the 1970s, is scheduled for an upgrade, increasing its size from 300mm to 450mm (12in to 18in).
