Three individuals have been taken into custody in connection with a residential explosion that claimed the lives of two people, including a seven-year-old boy. Archie York and 35-year-old Jason Laws perished in the blast, which occurred on 16 October in Violet Close in Benwell, Newcastle. Northumbria Police reported that a man in his 50s and two men in their 30s were apprehended on suspicion of two counts of manslaughter and the production of cannabis. They are currently being held in custody. Detective Chief Inspector Katie Smith, of Northumbria Police, stated: “This has been a truly tragic incident which resulted in the loss of two lives.” She added: “Our investigation will remain ongoing as we seek to provide answers to what happened.” Police also advised the community to refrain from speculation. Abbie York, Archie’s aunt, informed the BBC that he was a “loving boy, with a cheeky little grin on his face all of the time”. She mentioned that the family had relocated to the Benwell property shortly after Archie’s birth, and the primary school pupil had been learning to swim and enjoyed playing the violin. His parents and two-month-old brother received hospital treatment following the explosion but were discharged soon after. Three other adults were transported to the hospital, where one remains with serious injuries. More than 120 people were displaced from their residences due to the explosion. A firefighter who arrived at the scene 35 minutes after the blast characterized it as the “most challenging” incident encountered by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) in years.
