Australia hopeful Sam Konstas became the youngest male player to score a half-century in the Big Bash League, as Sydney Thunder secured a two-wicket win against Adelaide Strikers. Konstas, aged 19 years and 76 days, surpassed the previous record holder, Jason Sangha, who was 19 years and 104 days old. Making his debut in the competition, Konstas also established a new record for Thunder’s fastest half-century, reaching the milestone in 20 balls. The New South Wales batter, who was dismissed for 56 runs off 27 balls, had been under consideration for Australia’s Test squad against India, but Nathan McSweeney was ultimately chosen. Chasing a target of 183, Thunder found themselves at 149-7, needing 34 runs from the final two overs. Daniel Sams then dramatically scored 31 runs off Lloyd Pope’s penultimate over, an innings that included three sixes and three fours. Earlier, Jamie Overton had contributed an unbeaten 45 runs to the Strikers’ total of 182-8. Overton subsequently took a wicket with the first ball of the final over, but Thunder managed to cross the finish line with two balls to spare.
