The Bearpark Community Centre, which has been out of use since its closure in 2021 due to health and safety concerns, is slated for potential demolition by Durham County Council. The aim is to replace it with a new facility for the local villagers. The council is exploring options for the site, including the construction of a more compact community centre or the development of an outdoor area, such as a garden, for the village situated close to the city of Durham. Durham County Council has committed to collaborating with local residents and stated that “every effort will be made to secure resources towards the cost” of the proposed project. The Local Democracy Reporting Service indicates that the land is owned by CISWO, a charity focused on coal mining, which initially constructed the centre to offer recreational amenities for the mining community. Currently, the council is soliciting feedback from residents regarding the future use of the redeveloped site. The council noted, “The village has been going through a transformation from a former mining village to a place that has attracted new developments, housing, and families, which may have different need.” It further expressed a desire for the replacement facility to be an “exciting, well-used and cared-for facility which adds to the local pride in the village.” One primary option under consideration involves converting the existing centre into an outdoor area, potentially connected to the park located behind it. This outdoor space could serve various functions, such as a community garden, a play area, a market venue, or an event space for seasonal fairs. A second alternative proposes the construction of a reduced-size community centre on the property. Nevertheless, the council cautioned that this particular option would require a longer timeframe for completion. The council indicated its intention to collaborate with a local organization capable of assisting in securing funding and assuming responsibility for the operation and upkeep of the new structure. A public consultation regarding these proposals is currently underway and will conclude at 17:00 GMT on 17 November.
