Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who joined the club from Juventus in 2022, has received a seven-match domestic suspension from the Football Association (FA) due to his use of a racial slur concerning his team-mate Son Heung-min. In addition to the ban, Bentancur faces a £100,000 fine and a directive to complete a compulsory in-person education program. The FA initiated charges against him in September, following remarks he made during a television appearance in his native Uruguay in June. An FA statement confirmed: “Rodrigo Bentancur denied this charge, but the independent regulatory commission found it to be proven and imposed his sanctions following a hearing.” The 27-year-old player is set to miss domestic competition until 26 December. This includes Premier League fixtures against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea, among other games, as well as Spurs’ League Cup quarter-final match against Manchester United. However, he remains eligible to participate in Tottenham’s Europa League fixtures. This season, Bentancur has appeared 15 times for Tottenham, registering his inaugural goal of the campaign on 11 November during a loss to Ipswich. The incident occurred during his personal time, and because he plays in England, it fell under the FA’s jurisdiction. This contrasts with the case of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Fernandez, while on international duty, uploaded a video depicting Argentina’s Copa America victory celebrations, which the French Football Federation (FFF) stated contained an alleged “racist and discriminatory” chant. This matter is currently under investigation by Fifa, the global governing body. In its charge against the Uruguay international, the FA cited “an alleged breach of FA rule E3 for misconduct in relation to a media interview.” The FA further indicated that this constituted an “aggravated breach… as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality and/or race and/or ethnic origin.” During the specific media interview, when a presenter requested a Tottenham shirt, Bentancur responded: “Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same.” He subsequently issued an apology on social media, characterizing his remarks as a “very bad joke.” Bentancur also conveyed his apologies to South Korea forward Son, who stated he would “not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive.” On Monday, Ben Davies, a Spurs team-mate of both Bentancur and Son, commented on the ban while on international duty with Wales, stating that the squad had “put a line under it and moved on.” Nevertheless, he emphasized: “Ultimately, it’s important that we realise these kind of things need to be looked at with the seriousness that it has been.” Bentancur’s transgression carried a potential penalty ranging from a six to 12-match ban. In its external written reasons, the FA noted that the player “asked for the matter to be dealt with on the basis of written submissions only.” A reply to the charge, submitted by Tottenham on Bentancur’s behalf, asserted: “Rodrigo’s reply was sarcastic and a gentle rebuke for the journalist calling Sonny ‘the Korean’.” It further stated: “Rodrigo does not believe that all Koreans ‘look more or less the same’. The context of the exchange clearly shows Rodrigo is being sarcastic… Rodrigo was challenging the journalist in his description of his club team-mate.” Additionally, it was argued that Bentancur’s apology for his comments was “not for what he said, but for the inadequate reporting on the interview which excluded” the presenter’s reference to Son as “the Korean.” Nonetheless, the panel determined that Bentancur’s “conduct in using the words he did, in the full context in which they were used, was clearly abusive and insulting, and would amount to misconduct.” The panel found that his apologies indicated an acceptance of having caused offense, and an external statement from Spurs, issued in response to his apologies, “appears to have accepted that the player’s remarks had been objectively insulting and/or abusive and discriminatory.” The panel stated that Bentancur’s submission could not be accepted because it “flies in the face of the evidence” and “does not sit with the content or form of the player’s apologies or the response of THFC or Son Heung-min.” When deciding on the sanction, the independent regulatory commission considered that Bentancur had no prior offenses, did not intend to cause offense, and that, “despite the submissions made on his behalf before us which tended to undermine the force of that early apology, we consider his remorse was and is genuine.” The commission further noted: “In all the circumstances, we consider that, in terms of culpability and consequences, this breach falls towards the lower end of the guideline range but not the lowest point.” The anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out expressed its approval of the decision to hold Bentancur responsible for employing a racial slur. A statement from the charity indicated: “A significant number of reports were made to Kick It Out regarding the incident at the time,” emphasizing “Highlighting how abuse directed at players from East and Southeast Asian backgrounds not only impacts the individuals involved but also affects fans in the wider community.” It concluded: “It’s important we all recognise and report this type of discrimination when it happens.” The article then presented a selection of reader comments regarding Bentancur’s ban and its potential impact on Tottenham. Daniel considered the seven-match ban “extremely harsh,” anticipating Bentancur’s absence but noting Yves Bissouma as a capable replacement. Den argued that while a financial penalty and education were justified, the ban was “too far,” given the comments were made during international duty and not the fault of fans or the club. Matt stated Bentancur “shouldn’t have said what he said,” comparing it to job termination in other professions and calling football’s racism punishments “laughable.” Andrew, a Spurs fan, supported the ban, asserting that Bentancur, as a public figure, perpetuated a “ridiculous stereotype” and an example should be set. Dave found the “racist trope Bentancur used was awful” and agreed with the punishment, suggesting his quick apology might have mitigated a harsher sentence. He also expressed that it was “somewhat unfair” that the club and fans, including Son, now “pay the price,” but acknowledged a fine alone would have been insufficient.
