Charges have been brought against a former head teacher concerning non-recent child sexual abuse offences that occurred at a city school. According to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, these charges against James Rouse, aged 48, stem from allegations of child sexual abuse made by individuals in positions of trust against former pupils at St Anne’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College in Southampton, dating back to 2006. Additionally, four other former teachers are presently under investigation due to similar reports of non-recent child sexual abuse at the same school. Mr. Rouse, whose address is Lowford Hill Close in Southampton, is scheduled to appear before Portsmouth Magistrates Court on 13 January. A spokesperson for St Anne’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College stated, “We are deeply saddened and shocked by the allegations of historic sexual abuse linked to former members of our staff body.” The spokesperson added, “This is clearly deeply disturbing news for all of our community. We have only ever wanted St Anne’s to be a place of aspiration, education and sanctuary, and our thoughts and prayers are with victims.” The school confirmed it is continuing to cooperate with the police investigation and has implemented “extensive support” for its students. The spokesperson further noted, “This has included a number of external reviews of our safeguarding, which have found that our culture, leadership and processes are effective.” They concluded by saying, “We would encourage people to reach out to those that they trust if they have anything they would like to share.” Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary indicated it is conducting a “thorough and robust” investigation into allegations of non-recent sexual abuse committed within institutions or by prominent individuals. The police force has appealed to anyone who has experienced child sexual abuse to come forward.
