A man has confessed to the murder of a woman, Claire Knights, who was ambushed randomly while walking her dog on a beach in Kent. Ms. Knights, aged 54, from Upstreet, close to Canterbury, was discovered deceased on August 25, 2023, between St Nicholas-At-Wade and Minnis Bay, after a search that lasted two days. Harrison Lawrence Van-Pooss, 21, of Margate, entered a guilty plea to the murder charge and an additional voyeurism charge at Canterbury Crown Court. Following the court hearing, Detective Superintendent Kathleen Way commented, stating: “No-one could have foreseen this coming – a hideous, horrendous crime.” During an inquest held in September, a coroner indicated that Ms. Knights’ death was thought to be caused by a blunt force injury and drowning, further describing the death as “violent or unnatural.” The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reported that Van-Pooss had hidden Ms. Knights’ body subsequent to the attack. Subsequent to murdering Ms. Knights, he brought her spaniel, Zebulon, to a local store to purchase treats. The dog remained with him at the time of his arrest by police. Family members of Ms. Knights were observed weeping in court upon the guilty plea. Detective Superintendent Kathleen Way informed BBC South East: “This was an awful crime and one that was very, very difficult to investigate and one that was very difficult for the family to truly understand why Claire was the victim of this crime.” She added: “Whether or not he would have attacked someone else, I really can’t say but sadly Claire was the victim of his hideous crime on this occasion.” Natalie Smith, representing the CPS, stated: “We hope that today’s guilty plea brings some small comfort to Claire’s family and friends, knowing that the man who murdered her has finally acknowledged and taken responsibility for his horrendous actions on that fateful day.” The defence team, having thoroughly assessed whether Harrison Lawrence-Van Pooss possessed any mental health defence for the murder charge, has concurred with the prosecution’s expert witness that no such defence is applicable to him. This development, following months of uncertainty, ultimately resulted in today’s guilty plea for the murder of Claire Knights. Subsequent to Ms. Knights’ passing, her family characterized her as “a loving mum, partner, daughter and sister – an amazing contemporary artist, a trailblazer in life.” The Margate School, an art institution, posted a tribute to Ms. Knights on its official website. A statement from the school indicated that the former student “was a frequent visitor to exhibitions and events at TMS with her partner.” It further noted: “She formed strong bonds with her fellow students and friends at the school.” Van-Pooss’s sentencing proceedings are expected to last up to two days, with specific dates to be determined in the new year.
