A collection of new images from the sitcom Gavin and Stacey has been made public in anticipation of its forthcoming concluding episode. One promotional image shows James Corden portraying Smithy, with Ruth Jones as Nessa, Mathew Horne as Gavin, and Joanna Page as Stacey, situated on Trinity Street in Barry. Additionally, numerous stills from the episode itself are included. The concluding episode, scheduled to broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day, was previously announced this year. Scenes depict Melanie Walters as Gwen and Rob Brydon as Uncle Bryn entering Bryn’s car with Gavin, Stacey, and Nessa. The official synopsis states: “In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex.” Subsequently, Gavin, Stacey, and their extended family and friends are shown enjoying another gathering at Pam and Mick’s residence. It appears Bryn will attempt limbo during this event. The reason for the celebration, hosted by Pam and Mick, is also hinted at: “Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practising his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.” Prior to this final installment, Nessa and Smithy’s last appearance was in the 2019 Christmas special, during which Nessa proposed marriage to Smithy. The narrative of the finale resumes five years subsequent to these events, indicating developments in their story. During an appearance on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, co-writers Ruth Jones and James Corden disclosed that they were concluding their work on the series. Corden stated, “Today is the last day on the finale.” Jones added, “We’ve done the edit, now we’re doing the bit, the dub part.” She further explained, “It’s where all the sound goes on, the sound effects and all that kind of thing. It’ll be the last day that we’re in the studio together.” In addition to these initial images, viewers are offered a behind-the-scenes perspective. Recently released photographs from the filming process depict several beloved Gavin & Stacey cast members on set, including Ruth Jones, in her role as Nessa, receiving a make-up touch-up during filming on Trinity Street. The outcome of the proposal remains undisclosed. While the forthcoming finale marks the conclusion of Gavin & Stacey, it does not imply an end to the characters’ narratives, even if unseen by the audience. Jones commented, “I think we’ve always felt like they really do exist.” She elaborated, “It’s not like they’re dying – well, watch the final. But the thing is, we feel like they still exist so for us, they’re carrying on living their lives in Barry or Billericay, just we are not party to what goes on in their life any more.” The initial official image from Gavin & Stacey’s final episode was distributed earlier this month, following the completion of filming in October. The cast engaged with fans over several weeks while shooting the forthcoming special on the streets of Barry and at the Barry Island seafront. The final episode of Gavin and Stacey is scheduled to be broadcast on BBC iPlayer and BBC One at 21:00 GMT on 25 December.
