A court has been informed that a homeless man fatally assaulted his own grandfather in what was described as a “violent and unprovoked attack.” Ryan Cullen, 34, attacked Brian Cullen, 73, at his residence in Liverpool city centre during February. During proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that police had responded to a report of domestic assault, where Mr. Cullen was discovered with severe injuries. He subsequently passed away in hospital. Cullen, who has no fixed abode, admitted guilt to manslaughter and received a five-year hybrid order. This order mandates treatment in a psychiatric hospital until he is considered suitable for imprisonment. Merseyside Police stated that Mr. Cullen was “vulnerable” when his grandson assaulted him in a “violent and unprovoked attack” at the property on Midghall Street around 17:40 GMT on 10 February. Detective Chief Inspector Andy McCourt commented: “This is an absolutely tragic case which has devastated the family and, although Ryan Cullen has today faced justice, we know that such an outcome cannot provide much comfort or healing.“Domestic abuse can take many forms and I want to take this opportunity to highlight the help that is available to anyone who is suffering.” He further mentioned that specially trained officers are available to “support you with sensitivity and compassion.” He also encouraged individuals to “look out for family members, friends or neighbours.”
