Authorities in Magherafelt have retrieved a substantial volume of fireworks that were being unlawfully vended. Officers visited a property suspected of distributing these fireworks in Bellaghy, County Londonderry, on Monday. Approximately 3,400 fireworks, intended solely for display, were retrieved. These pyrotechnic devices, valued at an estimated £10,000, were confiscated along with nearly £600 in currency. A man was apprehended on suspicion of offenses linked to fireworks, specifically including the unlicensed sale of such items. He has subsequently been granted release on police bail. The PSNI stated that fireworks consist of explosive substances and, if handled improperly, possess the potential to inflict severe and permanently altering injuries. “It is illegal to possess, sell, handle or use fireworks if you do not have a licence and can be fined up to £5,000 for breaking the law.” The police added, “We are committed to preserving public safety and this fireworks seizure demonstrates our commitment.” They concluded, “We hope this sends a clear warning to traders not to break the law and put people’s lives at risk.” Alastair Brown, a plastic surgeon, is cautioning the public regarding the hazards associated with the improper use of such fireworks. Mr. Brown, who serves as a Consultant at Ulster Hospital, has attended to some of the gravest injuries resulting from fireworks, noting that patients present with injuries annually due to these devices. In an interview with BBC News NI, Mr. Brown indicated that certain patients necessitate multiple years of surgical procedures following fireworks-related injuries, and frequently the harm can only be “partly corrected.” He further stated, “It is not only the physical repercussions, it’s the extreme psychological and social aspects and these can be profound.” He cautioned that fireworks “can look fancy with their packaging, but they are dangerous explosives and should be handled as such.” He also mentioned, “Even sparklers can cause significant injuries, they burn at very high temperatures.” He concluded, “Clothes can catch fire and cause catastrophic burns.” Mr. Brown has served as a consultant within the Plastic Surgery Unit for over a decade. He reported that the predominant injuries he has addressed involve the face and hands. “Some of the injuries we have seen is where people have lost part or almost all of their hand and the consequence of that can be severe.“ He continued, “Each year the people we see presenting have injuries that are life changing. Firework injuries can cause severe scarring to areas such as the face or damage to the hands that affect how you work, socialise and live.” He urged individuals choosing to use fireworks this Halloween to handle them with the “utmost respect.” He observed that most fireworks-related injuries he encounters are avoidable, stemming from “careless or inappropriate use.” “Never let your guard down when using fireworks – follow the instructions and the fireworks code,” he advised Good Morning Ulster. He elaborated, “We would see a lot of the careless use of fireworks coming in, and they don’t quite understand at the time, when we follow them up into their early adulthood, it’s extreme regret.“ He concluded, “A moment’s carelessness can cause a lifetime of problems for you or for someone else.” Post navigation Police Seek Armed Burglars After Dursley Home Invasion Family of Missing Jack O’Sullivan States Christmas Intensifies Distress
