The Senegalese government has declared success in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, with the majority of ballots already tallied. It stated that Pastef, the governing party, secured a “large majority.” Should Pastef’s win be confirmed, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye would receive a robust mandate to pursue the radical economic and social reform agenda he was elected on in March. Former President Macky Sall, Prime Minister Amadou Ba, and Dakar’s mayor Barthelemy Dias, leaders of various opposition coalitions, have conceded their losses. Official results are anticipated later on Monday. The election itself proceeded peacefully nationwide on Sunday, despite isolated skirmishes among supporters of opposing parties leading up to the vote. Government spokesman Amadou Moustapha Ndieck Sarre informed the BBC, “We are proud of the Senegalese people and we would like to thank them for the large victory that it has given to Pastef.” Pastef has not yet disclosed the number of seats it secured. A majority in the 165-seat National Assembly requires 83 seats. In recent months, President Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko encountered difficulties advancing their reforms within the parliament, which was controlled by the opposition. Faye designated Sonko, his political mentor who was prohibited from presidential candidacy, as his prime minister shortly after assuming the presidency. The two leaders campaigned on a pledge of fundamental change, featuring an Afrocentric and nationalist platform that included a commitment to redefine Senegal’s relationship with France, its former colonial power. President Faye, at 44 years old, Africa’s youngest elected head of state, pledged economic restructuring, social equity, and a strong emphasis on anti-corruption efforts, which appealed to a significant portion of the youth. The incoming administration is anticipated to confront considerable obstacles in a nation grappling with substantial unemployment rates and unstable public finances.
