Donald John Trump was born in Queens, a borough of New York, on June 14, 1946. He was the fourth of five children, having two brothers, Fred Jr and Robert, and two sisters, Maryanne and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is currently his sole surviving sibling. His father, Fred, operated a successful construction enterprise within New York’s outer boroughs. Trump initially joined his father’s company in 1968 before establishing his own ventures in the heart of Manhattan. His portfolio expanded to include casinos, condominiums, golf courses, and hotels, spanning locations from Atlantic City, Chicago, and Las Vegas to international sites like India, Turkey, and the Philippines. Donald Trump’s distinctive and flamboyant style enabled him to gain prominence in New York’s business circles and achieve celebrity status in the entertainment industry through the television program, The Apprentice. Trump has been married three times and is a father to five children. His first marriage took place in 1977 to Ivana Zelníčková. He married his third wife, Melania Knauss, in 2005. Seven years prior to their marriage, when they first met, he was 52 years old and she was 28. His political career commenced in 2015 when he declared his intention to run for the White House during a press conference held at Trump Tower, surrounded by his family. His campaign slogan was: “Make America great again”. Following a contentious campaign marked by various controversies, he defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States in 2017. His presidential term was characterized by unpredictability for US allies, frequently involving public disagreements with foreign leaders. He withdrew the US from significant climate and trade agreements and initiated a trade dispute with China. The final year of his presidency was largely defined by criticism regarding his management of the Covid pandemic. Trump was compelled to pause his 2020 election campaign after receiving a diagnosis of the virus. Trump lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden but refused to concede the outcome, asserting that the election was rigged. On January 6, he gathered supporters in Washington, urging them to proceed to Congress. The gathering escalated into a riot, and his actions on that day are the subject of two criminal investigations. Although his political career appeared to be over, he subsequently announced another presidential bid and quickly emerged as the leading candidate for the Republican Party. Trump began the general election campaign facing a total of 91 felony charges. In May 2024, he was found guilty on 34 counts of fraud, which were connected to hush money payments made to adult-film actor Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election. While campaigning over the summer, a 20-year-old gunman attempted to assassinate him at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Days afterward, at the Republican National Convention, he received confirmation as the party’s presidential nominee. After a campaign that was both eventful and, at times, frenzied, Trump has secured victory in the 2024 US presidential election. His confirmation as president will establish him as the nation’s oldest leader ever. He will be 82 years old by the conclusion of his term.
