Jon Brady has resigned from his position as manager of League One club Northampton Town. He was initially appointed as the permanent manager in May 2021. The 49-year-old departs after three and a half years at the helm, with the club currently placed 21st in the league standings. This announcement comes just 48 hours after Brady had expressed his pride in the work accomplished during his time at Sixfields Stadium, prior to his 200th match in charge against Stevenage. The Cobblers subsequently lost that game 2-0, marking their sixth consecutive league fixture without a win. Ian Sampson, Brady’s assistant, has been named interim manager and will lead the team in Monday’s home game against Peterborough. The club confirmed that they received Brady’s resignation on Wednesday and accepted it “given the circumstances.” Chairman Kelvin Thomas stated: “We really appreciate what Jon has done for the club, initially within the academy and over the last four years or so as first-team manager.” He added, “I personally appreciated Jon’s kind words earlier this week when he acknowledged how well-supported he had been by the club.” Thomas further commented: “However we also all fully understand the real pressures that come with being a manager and while we all would have preferred things to be different, we understand Jon’s decision. We will now work with Jon and the LMA [League Managers’ Association] on his exit agreement.” Although he was unable to prevent Northampton’s relegation to League Two when he first took interim charge in February 2021, Brady successfully guided the Cobblers back to the third tier of English football two seasons later. Last term, he solidified their position in League One, with the team finishing 14th and a comfortable 16 points clear of the relegation places. However, this season has presented significant challenges, with the team securing only four wins to date, which leaves the club in the bottom four.
