British mixed doubles badminton pair Lauren Smith and Marcus Ellis have concluded their international careers, following their announcement that they are expecting a baby. Their joint achievements include a European gold medal in 2019, participation in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, and a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. On Instagram, Smith, aged 33, stated, “We’re so happy to share the news that our family is growing.” She further explained, “This means we won’t be returning to international competition, and are starting a new chapter in our lives.” Individually, Ellis, 35, secured a bronze medal alongside Chris Langridge in the men’s doubles event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, while Smith has accumulated a total of seven Commonwealth medals. Smith also mentioned, “Marcus will continue to play and coach, in his clubs and at training centres around Europe.” She added, “I will continue to create content and develop my skills and experience in media.” Mark Beecher, the head of performance at Badminton England, commented, “They have competed at the very highest level in our sport and we are proud of all they have achieved.” Post navigation England U23s Coach Emma Coates Affirms Khiara Keating Possesses ‘Huge Potential’ Amid Senior Squad Exclusion Rory McIlroy Concludes Challenging Year with DP World Tour Championship Victory
