Plans for a new 130-bed student accommodation complex in Coventry have received approval. Existing factory structures located on Charterhouse Road are slated for demolition to facilitate the construction of this new development, following the endorsement by Coventry City Council on 21 October. During a meeting held in 2023, fire safety concerns were brought forward, leading councillors to stipulate that design approval would only be granted if developers Sama Investments adhered to a specific safety plan. Consequently, a framework has been established, mandating the installation of sprinklers in all bedrooms and communal areas, which must be completed prior to occupancy. Sama Investments has indicated that the structure will comprise sections of four and six storeys in height. Additionally, issues regarding the building’s change of use were articulated at the meeting last year, prompting councillors to ensure that the flats will exclusively accommodate students during academic terms, with alternative uses permitted outside these periods. In the wake of this decision, Bilal Ahmed, chairman and founder of Sama Investments, commented that the project is expected to contribute “real value” to the city and address the increasing need for student accommodation. He further stated, “Importantly, it will also help unlock existing family housing elsewhere in the city rather than force students to rely on HMOs and the private rented sector.” The Local Democracy Reporting Service, which reports on councils and other public service bodies, compiled this report.
