Official approval has been granted for a business hub application at Chatham Docks, notwithstanding opposition to the contentious proposals. The planning committee of Medway Council initially approved Peel Waters’ application for the Basin3 plans in May. However, Kelly Tolhurst, who was then the MP for Rochester and Strood, subsequently requested a call-in of the decision. After the government opted not to intervene with the decision, the council reaffirmed its approval of the application. This confirmation came despite an ongoing campaign advocating for the site’s retention as an operational dockyard. Peel Waters, the site’s owner, is now authorized to proceed with the redevelopment of the 18-acre location, which represents Medway’s final operational docks. The application has generated controversy, with numerous current businesses, such as ArcelorMittal Kent Wire, stating that they anticipate being displaced from the premises. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, a common perception is that this development marks the initial phase of converting a significant portion of the broader Chatham Docks site for residential purposes. Conversely, Peel Waters has stated that the application in question expands the types of businesses permitted to operate in the area, rather than reclassifying it for housing. The company further indicated that the Basin3 project, which involves demolishing current warehouses and constructing new workspaces and units of diverse dimensions, is projected to triple the employment opportunities at the site. James Whittaker, the managing director of Peel Waters, commented that the proposed campus is intended to “complement the surrounding business, educational and residential communities”. However, Phil Taylor, former chief executive at ArcelorMittal Kent Wire, expressed his view: “It’s a sad day for Kent Wire and a sad day for Medway.“I’m disappointed, I’m saddened, and I’m shocked,” he stated.“It’s illogical to destroy Chatham Docks, a high value employer. It’s illogical and has been from the start.” For updates from BBC Kent, connect via Facebook, X, and Instagram.
