Attendees have voiced their profound disappointment following the abrupt cancellation of Zayn Malik’s concert in Newcastle at the eleventh hour. The musical artist was scheduled to perform at the O2 City Hall on Tuesday, but individuals already present at the venue were unexpectedly informed that the event would not proceed. Concertgoers conveyed that they were “gutted” and wished the cancellation had been announced earlier, yet also felt “proud” of Malik for performing after the passing of his One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne. In a statement shared on his Instagram stories, Malik expressed that he was “truly sorry” but his voice “just isn’t there at all tonight”. Emily, a resident of Newcastle, remarked, “Everyone around me was shocked and upset, people were crying too.” She further added, “I was so proud of him. Especially after losing Liam too, it’s huge for him to be able to still perform.” Adele Peterson, from Newbottle, County Durham, who was at the location with her daughter and her friends, stated: “They were all devastated it was cancelled, sitting waiting excited.” She also mentioned, “I was talking to a lady who had come with her daughter from Iceland.” Ms Peterson noted that attendees were provided with “alien pictures” to wave during a particular song, and the support act did perform. She believed the cancellation could have been communicated sooner. “I know some had been waiting since 12pm outside. We spent about two and a half hours in the cold.” The concert will not be rescheduled, and ticket holders are receiving refunds. Emily commented further: “Now it’s fully cancelled I’m gutted. Any other city like London or Manchester would have likely got a rescheduled date.” She conveyed empathy for his illness and inability to perform, but also frustration that “the decision to cancel was left so late, 20 minutes after he was due on stage.” The “Stairway to the Sky Tour” represents Malik’s inaugural solo tour. Previous US engagements were postponed following the “heartbreaking loss” of Liam Payne, 31, who died in October after a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Argentina. Malik’s statement, shared on his Instagram stories subsequent to the Newcastle concert’s cancellation, conveyed: “I’m so sorry to do this but my voice just isn’t there at all tonight and without it there’s no show. “I’m truly sorry to let you down, especially at such short notice…I held onto hope until the very last moment.” The venue has been contacted for comment.
