A collection of football memorabilia belonging to a legendary footballer is scheduled for auction. The items include Gary Shaw’s 1982 European Cup winner’s medal, which he received when Aston Villa triumphed over Bayern Munich, along with his 1981 Football League Championship medal. Shaw, who was 63, made his debut for Villa early in the 1978-79 season and was the team’s leading scorer in 1979-80. He passed away in September from injuries sustained after a fall. These items are set to go under the hammer on 5 December, handled by Telford-based Mullock Jones Auctioneers & Valuers, with an estimated guide price of £50,000. Ben Jones, from the auctioneers, commented, “Gary Shaw was an integral part of Aston Villa’s history and a cherished figure in English football.” Shaw was recognized as the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year in 1981 and the European Young Player of the Year in 1982. The former England Under-21s striker also played for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, and Shrewsbury Town during his career. After retiring from football in 1992, he worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador at Villa Park. In October, crowds gathered at the stadium for his funeral procession.
