The British and Irish Lions have showcased the jersey for their upcoming tour of Australia next year, which will feature a deeper red hue. The team is scheduled to play nine matches in Australia, in addition to a preparatory game against Argentina in Dublin. The jersey’s design incorporates a pattern woven into its material, representing the unity of the four nations, along with a traditional ‘grandad’ collar. According to Lions chief executive Ben Calveley, the colour alteration was made with the aim of producing a shirt that would be “more wearable for the fans” outside of game days. The Lions are set to depart for Australia in June, with the objective of securing a series victory, a feat not achieved since their previous tour to the nation in 2013. Lions head coach Andy Farrell stated, “Excitement is really starting to build for next year and this jersey launch is only going to add to it.” He added, “That goes for me, all rugby fans, and all those who are playing for places on that touring squad.” James Durbin, Rugby Australia’s chief commercial officer, indicated that the Wallabies’ elimination during the pool stage of last year’s World Cup has not diminished the excitement for the upcoming three Test matches against the Lions. Durbin commented, “The excitement for this tour is like nothing we have ever seen before in Australia.” He continued, “It comes at a very important time for rugby in Australia. We have had a very significant reset on and off the field in the past 12 months and this tour is really the gateway leading into a golden period for rugby in Australia, with us hosting the 2027 Rugby World Cup, the 2029 Rugby World Cup for the women and the Olympics in 2032 for our Sevens teams.” Under the guidance of new coach Joe Schmidt, Australia concluded the recent Rugby Championship at the bottom of the standings, having secured one victory out of six matches. Durbin stated: “Joe Schmidt has been in charge of the Wallabies for about six months now and you can already see the changes he is making and the influence he is having on the team.” He added, “He is looking for progress and how the team is performing, not Ws and Ls in the ledger at the moment.”
