A local Scout group has provided assistance to two young Ukrainian refugees who initially struggled with English and were “scared to talk” upon beginning school. Artem and Yehor, both aged six, came to Gosport, Hampshire, in 2022. Their families had departed Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion. Lisa Young, the lead volunteer at the 6th Gosport Scout Group, stated that the two boys have since developed into “confident, kind, brave and bold” children. Mila, Yehor’s mother, expressed her happiness that her son could experience a “normal childhood” and grow up in a secure environment. She commented, “Life is horrible for children living in Ukraine now.” She added that Squirrels held significant importance for both Yehor and Artem, and also contributed positively to her own mental well-being. “We parents also have the opportunity to communicate with other adults. It’s our social life,” she stated. Artem, originally from Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, and Yehor, from Kyiv, met at 6th Gosport Squirrels after their families received referrals from their Ukrainian family support worker. Artem recounted, “When I started school I was scared to talk as I didn’t know how to talk English.” Yehor described England as “quiet” and “safe” in contrast to Ukraine. He added, “We don’t have rockets or shooting here.” “I can sleep more here,” he concluded. Ms Young expressed that she was “thrilled” by the progress the two boys had made. She remarked, “Their friendship group has expanded at Squirrels, their ability to converse in English is amazing.” She continued, “And when it comes to activities, they thrive outdoors and enjoy everything Scouts brings them.” “The sky is the limit for them both and we’re lucky enough to be supporting them to reach it,” she concluded.
