Murals are planned across Leeds to honor several sporting heroes, including a Paralympian who holds a world record and a swimmer who won a gold medal. Athlete Kadeena Cox and swimmer Doris Storey were chosen for this recognition by volunteers associated with the Leeds Museums and Galleries initiative, On the Pitch, Off the Pitch. Additionally, artworks will be developed to acknowledge Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club, the city’s “rich dance heritage,” and its prominent skateboarding figures. Catherine Robins, the project curator, stated that they are seeking businesses to provide locations for the artworks, which have not yet been designed. She commented: “Seeing their legacy honoured by these new artworks will be a very proud moment for us and for the city. We’d love to hear from any buildings, businesses or venues who think they’d be a fitting place to host a mural and who might be able to help us create a lasting tribute to these incredible Leeds stories.” Kadeena Cox, a native of Chapeltown, has secured seven Paralympic medals, encompassing bronze, silver, and gold, in both cycling and sprinting disciplines. Swimmer Doris Storey represented Great Britain in the 1936 Summer Olympics and earned two gold medals for England at the 1938 British Empire Games. Established in 1948, Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club holds the distinction of being the first club of its type in the UK. Its founder, Alford Gardner, passed away last month at the age of 98. This initiative was awarded a grant of £210,665 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, facilitated by Dynamic Collections – a lottery program designed to encourage organizations to make their collections accessible. Leeds already features several sporting murals, such as a tribute to former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa located in Hyde Park and an artwork honoring Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow at Leeds Beckett University. Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, expressed the hope that these murals would “inspire future generations” of sports stars.
