Tuition fees for a PhD student have been reimbursed following the emotional distress she experienced due to her inability to cover the costs of her education. Sue Agazie, a former PhD student from Nigeria at Newcastle University, filed a complaint after facing potential deportation from the UK for unpaid tuition fees, concurrently with her treatment for stage five kidney disease. The resolution of the complaint, reviewed by the BBC, indicates that the university repaid Mrs. Agazie £13,285, cancelled her outstanding rent, and provided £5,000 as compensation for distress and inconvenience. However, the university stated it found no evidence to substantiate certain aspects of her complaints regarding her treatment. The university stated it was unable to comment on specific individual cases but affirmed that complaints are “investigated thoroughly” and that fee reimbursement is a potential resolution. Mrs. Agazie had previously asserted that her PhD supervisor had assured her of funding upon her recruitment, which ultimately did not materialize, leading to her inability to pay tuition and the threat of removal from the UK. While the complaint’s resolution found no proof of a funding promise, it described the financial communications Mrs. Agazie received from the accommodation and tuition fee departments as “regrettable.” The complaint was partially supported, with the university recognizing the anxiety Mrs. Agazie experienced due to her financial inability to pay for her studies and her subsequent inability to continue them. Mrs. Agazie expressed her hope that “other international students can learn from my case and demand fair treatment that they are entitled to.” She intends to stay in the UK to pursue her “critical care” and has submitted an application for leave to remain outside the standard immigration rules, citing compassionate medical grounds for herself, her husband, and their son. She had previously stated that she lacked the financial resources to access high-quality healthcare for her condition in Nigeria.
