An Aberdeen care facility has received an Improvement Notice after regulators expressed “serious and significant concerns” regarding the standard of care provided. This action comes after a Care Inspectorate visit earlier in the year, which revealed that residents at Ruthrieston House faced considerable danger due to deficiencies in medication management. During the October inspection, it was discovered that one resident did not receive their prescribed medication for 13 days, and another experienced drowsiness after medication was left in their mouth. VSA, the organization operating the home, stated its commitment to fulfilling the demands outlined during the recent follow-up inspection. The Care Inspectorate has specified five areas requiring enhancement. Ruthrieston House is required to implement the “significant improvements” by January 20. These necessary enhancements encompass more thorough auditing of medication. Additionally, care home personnel have been instructed to ensure that risks to service users are more accurately documented and managed. Sue Freeth, VSA’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “We take the feedback of the regulator extremely seriously and are working as hard as possible to complete the requirements detailed in the recent Care Inspectorate report.” She added: “We remain in regular contact with the Care Inspectorate and continue to work closely with Aberdeen City Council, Ruthrieston House residents, their families and next of kin.” The Care Inspectorate indicated that it would “not hesitate to take further action” should ongoing improvements fail to materialize. A representative also stated: “We understand this is a difficult and distressing time for residents, their families and staff at the service.” The spokesperson continued: “However, our first priority is always the health and wellbeing of residents of the service.” They concluded: “We are in contact with and monitoring the service to follow up on the required improvements.” Copyright 2024 BBC.
