Whisky producer Chivas Brothers has announced its intention to construct a new distillery on the isle of Islay. This initiative marks the first time the Scotch maker, known for single malts such as Aberlour and The Glenlivet, will establish a presence on the island. An application for the proposed development has been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council, designating a site at Gartbreck Farm in Bowmore. A decision on this application is expected by late March. Islay is already recognized as a significant whisky destination in Scotland, home to 10 distilleries including Laphroaig, Ardbeg, and Lagavulin. The island’s oldest distillery, Bowmore, commenced operations in 1779 and is currently owned by the producers of the American bourbon brand Jim Beam. Chivas Brothers is collaborating with Islay Estates on the new distillery project. Islay Estates has stated its commitment to working closely with the community to ensure minimal impact on residents. Planning officials indicated that the whisky makers aspire to make a “significant positive contribution” to Islay. The proposed plans include facilities for distillery tours, a dedicated gift shop, and areas for tasting sessions. The developers anticipate hosting 72 visitors daily, though they do not expect these to be “new” tourists to the island. Members of the public are invited to view the plans and submit feedback on the Argyll and Bute Council website.
