Ruben Amorim, the new manager for Manchester United, has identified himself as the “Smiling One” while also stating his readiness to be uncompromising when necessary. He is the seventh Portuguese manager to join the Premier League. This self-description by Amorim comes over two decades after another Portuguese coach, Jose Mourinho, introduced himself to the Premier League as “the Special One.” Although Amorim may not possess the same level of charisma as Mourinho, he presents himself as an energetic personality initially. Nevertheless, Amorim acknowledges that this demeanor might change once the demanding work begins with the league match against Ipswich on Sunday. He stated, “I can be the Smiling One but when we have a job to do I will be a different person.” He added, “There are some places to have fun but I can be ruthless when I have to be.” Furthermore, he remarked, “[I can] be the nicest guy you will ever see, but if there is someone just thinking about himself, I will be a different person.” Amorim is currently familiarizing himself with his squad, though he has already conveyed his “love” for England midfielder Mason Mount, citing his attitude. At 39 years old, Amorim holds the distinction of being the youngest manager for United since Wilf McGuiness took over from Sir Matt Busby in 1969. The club’s distinguished history is largely founded upon the accomplishments of Busby and his fellow Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson. Amorim was less than two years old when Ferguson transferred from Aberdeen to United in November 1986, and he mentioned that they have not yet met. Nevertheless, the Manchester United of 2024 significantly differs from the club Ferguson departed in 2013, let alone the one he initially joined. The former Sporting manager acknowledges the necessity of approaching the role in his own manner. He asserted, “I have to be me. I’m always paying attention to details, trying to focus the players on the history of the club, not just the recent history. This is a club that has to win things.” He continued, “But it’s a different time. I cannot be the same guy that Alex Ferguson was – it’s a different time and I need to have a different approach. But I can also be demanding.”
