A keeper stated that six wallabies have adapted “remarkably well” following their transfer to a zoo situated near Leeds. This group of female wallabies reached Lotherton Wildlife World on October 24, having relocated from Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Dan Messer, the zoo manager, explained that despite the wallabies’ capacity to jump horizontally up to 12ft (3.7m), their enclosure would ensure their security through a 6ft (1.8m) fence and “anti-dig borders.” Mr. Messer remarked, “Wallabies are one of the hardiest little animals out there.” He further explained, “They have a thick coat that keeps them warm.“Despite what people think about them coming from Australia, they are mainly found in Tasmania and the south-east coast, which is more similar to the UK weather-wise.” Wallabies belong to the marsupial family, sharing ancestry with grey kangaroos. Female wallabies possess a pouch where they nurse their young, known as joeys. A joey remains within its mother’s pouch until approximately six months of age, at which point it emerges to move independently. Lotherton Hall’s Wildlife World houses numerous protected animals and contributes to global breeding and conservation initiatives. Among the other species present are emus, cranes, critically endangered Visayan warty pigs, and tapirs. Mr. Messer, who has overseen the zoo’s operations for 18 months, identified monkeys as his preferred animals at the location. He stated, “Visitors’ favourite animal is often the capybaras or the penguins.“But I’m a primate guy.”We’ve got cotton-top tamarins and my favourite animal is a gelada although we don’t have room for those on site.” The text concludes by directing readers to highlights from West Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, the latest episode of Look North, or an invitation to submit a story for coverage.
