A leader of outdoor learning sessions for schoolchildren reported that some participants had never previously visited a beach. This initiative, named Generation Green 2, is a year-long, government-funded project designed for schools located in socially disadvantaged areas. Approximately 800 pupils from the North East region have enrolled to visit the Northumberland Coast National Landscape as part of the program. During these excursions, children spend a day either on a beach or at a farm, with residential trips to Seahouses also being offered. Bridie Melkerts of Mudlarks Outdoors, who has conducted sessions on Alnmouth beach, stated: “Many have never seen this stretch of coastline before, and for some it was their first ever trip to the sea”. Among the participants who have completed a session at Alnmouth are children from Thomas Bewick C of E Primary School in Ashington. Ms. Melkerts observed, “It was just a joy to watch their excitement and enthusiasm.” She added that “Together they have caught crabs, created amazing natural art, built dens and cleaned beaches.” Head teacher Jessica Hodson commented, “They talked about how beautiful it was and really enjoyed the different activities, the litter picking, sandcastle competition and rock pooling.” She further noted, “The children learned so much about the coast and how nobody is too small to make a difference.” Ten-year-old Harrison described the experience as “the best school day ever,” expressing a wish to “sleep here.” Lucy, aged nine, mentioned discovering “treasure,” while Jacob, also ten, characterized the beach as “so beautiful.” The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has provided funding for Generation Green 2. This funding covers the costs of the sessions and bus fares, which can often present a financial obstacle for some schools. A coalition comprising 24 organisations and authorities is responsible for delivering the project, with approximately 25,000 children participating nationwide. Of those visiting National Landscapes, one-third are attending sites in Northumberland.
