Proposals designed to revitalize Swindon town centre, aiming to make it a more dynamic location for living, working, and investment, are scheduled for presentation to the council next week. The document, titled ‘Heart of Swindon’, outlines intentions to construct up to 5,000 new residences, which would alter the town’s skyline. To foster investment and bolster business confidence, Swindon Borough Council additionally plans to fund a multi-million pound entertainment facility. Local residents are invited to contribute to the finalization of this document prior to the town centre being presented to significant businesses in London this January. Councillor Jim Robbins, who leads Swindon Borough Council, expressed his resolve, stating he is: “Determined the final vision document will not be another glossy travel brochure where we never arrive at the airport.” Despite Swindon Borough Council grappling with a revenue shortfall of £9m, Mr Robbins indicated that investing in a multi-purpose entertainment venue, with an anticipated cost in the region of £15m, is crucial for demonstrating confidence in the town to prospective investors. He mentioned that the council is collaborating with operators to determine how the venue can be financed in a “cost effective way”. Mr Robbins further stated: “It’ll means the council taking a bit of a risk on an investment in it but we know it’s the right thing to do to show other investors that Swindon is a place that they want to put their money.” The council aims to attract “significant investment from the private sector” during an event scheduled at the House of Lords in January.
