An upcoming netball tournament is scheduled to take place in support of a player diagnosed with stage four colon cancer. The Jersey Netball Association (JNA) has arranged this event, set for Tuesday 17 December at Les Ormes, with the goal of collecting funds for Jersey Cancer Relief and Friends of Oncology Jersey (FOJO). These two organizations have provided assistance to Sammy Kean since her diagnosis on Christmas Eve two years prior. Ms. Kean, aged 31 and a mother of two, expressed gratitude to the JNA for their backing. Prior to her diagnosis with the illness, Ms. Kean was hospitalized following a bowel perforation, necessitating emergency surgery for a stoma bag. She stated, “I’m taking it one day at a time… I feel very fortunate that I’m still able to do the things I love like netball.” She added, “I do intend to do more fundraising events for other charities that have helped me and test my limit within reason because I am still going through treatment.” Ms. Kean is expected to participate in the tournament alongside other individuals. Among the participants who have registered for the tournament is Kayla Waddle, who voiced her hope for increased participation. Ms. Waddle commented: “I just think it’s such an important cause… It’s to support someone who is so well loved in the netball community.” Learning of Ms. Kean’s situation via the JNA, Ms. Waddle expressed a desire to contribute. She further remarked: “I think the tournament is going to be such a lovely day and be an absolute laugh with everyone.” For updates, follow BBC Jersey on X and Facebook.
