Sheffield has confirmed an increase in taxi licence fees and associated charges, marking the first such adjustment in eight years. This increment will affect private hire drivers and their vehicles, hackney carriage drivers and their vehicles, as well as private hire operators, commencing in February 2025. According to a report issued prior to a Sheffield City Council waste and street scene policy committee meeting, this change, the first since 2016, is attributed to “increased costs to the service.” The committee had previously been informed that the total costs linked to the service exceeded £1,000,000 in the preceding financial year, while income stood at approximately £830,000, leading to a shortfall of about £170,000. With these revisions, the cost of a new year-long driving licence will escalate from £169 to £223. Similarly, a one-year renewal fee will climb from £97 to £223. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that a survey revealed “a large proportion of respondents expressed concern about the financial impact of the proposals on individuals and businesses, especially given the current cost-of-living crisis.” These approved modifications are scheduled to become effective from 3 February.
