According to NHS officials, a recently inaugurated testing facility is anticipated to contribute to lowering waiting periods. The initial patients have been received at the £15 million community diagnostic centre (CDC) located in Skegness, Lincolnshire. This facility has introduced several NHS services to the town that were previously unavailable, such as echocardiograms, used for identifying heart conditions, along with CT and MRI scanning equipment. Prof Karen Dunderdale, who serves as the chief executive of Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals Group, stated: “We believe this to be the most significant NHS investment in Skegness in recent years.” She further commented: “The CDC will offer more choice and convenience to help reduce travel for patients, while increasing the number of appointments to help bring down waiting times for diagnostic tests.” Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) are established to provide patients with faster and simpler access to tests, including electrocardiograms, blood tests, and ultrasounds, outside of primary hospital locations. Construction was completed during the summer months, and the facility commenced operations at the close of November. Bernard North, a resident of Sutton on Sea, was among the initial patients to utilize the centre, situated on Old Wainfleet Road, when he underwent a CT scan. He remarked: “My wife Rosalyn and I didn’t realise this facility was here and thought it might be a mobile scanner, but this was fantastic.” The NHS reported an approximate £42 million investment in CDCs across Lincolnshire during 2024. This includes a £23 million facility in Lincoln, scheduled to launch this month, and a £5 million expansion of a Grantham centre, which became operational in March. Prof Dunderdale indicated that over 118,000 tests have been conducted as part of the Lincolnshire CDC programme since its inception in November 2021. She concluded: “We are very proud to be delivering new diagnostic services that we know will make a huge difference to the local community.”
