Prime Minister Kier Starmer has extended offers of peerages to a former Member of Parliament for Bristol and a former mayor of the city. The recipients of these honours are Thangam Debbonaire, who served as the MP for Bristol West from 2010 to 2024, and Marvin Rees, who held the mayoral office between 2016 and 2024. Mr. Rees concluded his term in May, whereas Ms. Debbonaire was unseated by Carla Denyer, who became Bristol’s inaugural Green MP. These two individuals are among 28 additional Labour nominees put forward for consideration in Parliament’s upper house. Attaining the status of Lords would enable both politicians to potentially be chosen for cabinet positions, mirroring the path of David Cameron, who was appointed Foreign Secretary during the previous Conservative administration. On the social media platform X, Ms. Debbonaire expressed that she was “honoured” by the invitation. Previously, Mr. Starmer had pledged to completely abolish the House of Lords. However, Labour is now pursuing a phased strategy, which includes the upcoming removal of hereditary peers. A legislative proposal currently advancing through Parliament aims to eliminate the 92 seats designated for peers whose titles are inherited through family lines.
