Recognition has been given to a nurse who dedicated over five decades to the NHS. Beverley Pedley, who commenced her career as a cadet at 15 years old at Standon Orthopaedic Hospital in Staffordshire, passed away last month at the age of 69. Her training commenced in 1971, leading to her qualification as a nurse at Stafford Hospital in 1973. Subsequently, she spent approximately 30 years working in intensive care. Ms Pedley relocated from Stafford to Telford during the mid-1990s. At a service held at Telford Crematorium, her former colleagues honored her by forming an honour guard around her coffin. Her son, Adam Hodson, described the day as “lovely” yet “obviously sad”. He stated, “A lot of her friends and family were regaling me about tales from the wards and tales from their time in hospital with her.” He added, “It was amazing. It was really humbling to hear all these stories about mum that I’d never heard before.” Mr. Hodson mentioned that his mother retired in 2019 to look after his father after he was diagnosed with cancer. However, with the onset of the pandemic, she resumed caring for patients in hospitals. He explained, “Mum just felt a pull, a calling back, she just felt that she had to go back and help.” He recalled vivid memories from his youth, seeing his mother’s books on the dining room table while she studied to become a senior nurse practitioner. He quoted, “We’d spend time just going through things and reading up on medical stuff – it was quite pleasant to be fair.” Mr. Hodson, currently a medical negligence lawyer and a part-time coroner, stated that his mother’s impact had “definitely rubbed off” on him. She later joined one of the firms where he previously worked, handling medical specifics while he managed the legal aspects. He shared, “She was very proud of me when I got the coroner’s job.” He further noted that the service was attended by over 100 well-wishers, with additional attendees joining remotely from New Zealand and Tokyo. Among those offering tributes, approximately 40 of Ms Pedley’s former colleagues created an honour guard, referred to as a nightingale honour guard, encircling her coffin during the ceremony.
