A new £16 million footbridge spanning the River Severn is scheduled to commence operations following over a year of construction. The Kepax Bridge in Worcester, connecting Gheluvelt Park with the Kepax site in St John’s, will open on Thursday. Local authorities anticipate that this new infrastructure will promote increased pedestrian and cycling activity into Worcester, thereby contributing to a reduction in road traffic. Councillor Marc Bayliss previously commented on the project, stating: “This is an important project for the county, one that will bring a major boost for the health and wellbeing of people who live, study, visit or work in Worcester.” Work on the bridge commenced in October of the previous year, with its various sections being installed during the summer months. This structure will integrate into a figure-of-eight pathway system along the River Severn, guiding individuals from Diglis Bridge in the southern area, past Sabrina Bridge closer to the city centre, and up to the newly constructed bridge in the northern part. A local resident conveyed to BBC Hereford and Worcester that the bridge would benefit him “massively.” He elaborated, stating: “There are multiple trips I do in Worcester every week, for which I will now be taking a shortcut over Kepax as opposed to going all the way to Sabrina and then back up through town.” Another individual expressed that she believed it would be “great” because it would provide enhanced access for dog walkers.
