Worthing Pier, located in West Sussex, is scheduled to resume operations on Wednesday, concluding a closure period exceeding seven weeks. The pier had been inaccessible to the public since October 9, when engineers from Worthing Borough Council detected damage to its structural iron supports. Although the commencement of repairs was postponed due to the identification of “hidden damage,” work ultimately commenced on November 13. Sophie Cox, who serves as the Leader of Worthing Borough Council, commented: “This project has shown just how much the people of Worthing think about their pier and how important it is to the town and its identity.” Following this, on Thursday, engineers proceeded to dismantle the scaffolding on the pier, with workers now poised to finalize the repairs situated above the deck. The scope of the repair work encompasses restoration of artwork, which the council suspects may have been vandalised during the pier’s closure period. Furthermore, several businesses situated on the pier received only a 12-hour notification prior to its closure. Alex Coombes, the proprietor of the restaurant Perch on the Pier, stated: “It’s been an extraordinarily difficult time, filled with uncertainty and stress. “We’ve prioritised looking after our team and guests and can’t wait to have them both back on the pier.”” The council’s projection for the repair expenses exceeds £430,000, an amount that will not be covered by its current budget allocated for pier upkeep.
