England captain Heather Knight marked her comeback from a calf injury during Sydney Thunder’s 33-run triumph against the Hobart Hurricanes in the Women’s Big Bash League. Knight had previously ruptured a tendon while batting and retiring hurt during England’s T20 World Cup loss to the West Indies, though she had stated the injury “would not keep her out for long”. The 33-year-old had been absent for Thunder’s initial game, a defeat by the Hurricanes, but she made her return to earn the Player of the Match title in Thursday’s victory, contributing 48 runs from 28 balls. Knight and Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu formed a 35-run partnership for the third wicket, helping Thunder achieve a total of 146-5 from their 17 overs following a delayed start. Right-arm fast bowler Heather Graham stood out among the Hurricanes’ bowlers, securing 2-18. The Hurricanes’ pursuit began with the dismissal of Knight’s England team-mate Danni Wyatt-Hodge for only seven runs by Athapaththu, soon followed by Nicola Casey’s dismissal for five. Elyse Villani and Heather Graham established a 43-run partnership, but both batters were dismissed within a span of four deliveries. The Hurricanes’ lower order was unable to contribute significant runs, concluding their innings at 113-8. Hannah Darlington emerged as Thunder’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 3-24. Knight commented, “The body never feels good at 33, but it was nice to be back out there. I’m really pleased with how it went and it is great to start tournaments with wins.” Thunder is scheduled to play their subsequent match on Friday against the Adelaide Strikers at the Sydney Oval. Knight is set to captain England again during their upcoming tour of South Africa, commencing on 24 November.
