The annual water quality ratings for three beaches in Merseyside have been lowered after elevated bacteria levels, associated with pollution, were detected. Specifically, West Kirby beach’s rating decreased from good to “sufficient,” and Wallasey and Meols beach’s ratings changed from excellent to good, according to recent tests conducted by the Environment Agency. Consequently, Leasowe is now the sole beach in the vicinity that maintains an excellent classification. Advocates express concern that the water quality could deteriorate further if current trends persist. Should a beach’s water quality be deemed poor, signage warning individuals against swimming is erected. West Kirby hosts the well-known Wirral Waters Sports centre, catering to activities like sailing and kite surfing, and its adjacent beach frequently attracts large numbers of visitors on sunny days. Preliminary data gathered at West Kirby indicated that sewage was not the source of the issue, but ongoing investigations are still underway.
