A proposal to limit the application of the weed killer glyphosate is scheduled for presentation before a council. The Green Party has formally requested Cumberland Council to “establish a plan to phase out the use of glyphosate and other synthetic herbicides and pesticides on all council owned or managed land”. Green Party councillors Jill Perry and Helen Davison stated that more than 80 councils across the UK have already either discontinued or implemented measures to end the use of this pesticide. This chemical is a potent herbicide capable of eliminating most plants, yet concerns persist regarding its broader effects on bird and insect populations. Perry and Davison urged Cumberland Council to acknowledge that “glyphosate-based herbicides and pesticides being used on council owned and managed land were detrimental to the natural world and, by extension, to society”. The Local Democracy Reporting Service indicated that the motion encourages the authority to involve communities in achieving pesticide-free status, including ensuring the council communicates the benefits of ceasing pesticide use. It also suggested inviting residents to participate in trials of alternative weed management techniques. The council is being asked to implement a gradual cessation of all pesticide use, including glyphosate, over a three-year period, a requirement that would also extend to all subcontractors. This recommendation is slated for discussion at a council meeting on Tuesday.
