John Askey, the 60-year-old manager of National League South side Truro City, has expressed that he is “flattered” by the offer of a new contract. He has now signed a new ‘multi-year’ deal, having successfully guided the club into the top four of the sixth tier during his initial half-season at the helm. Under Askey’s leadership, Truro City has achieved 11 wins and five losses in 21 league matches. Speaking to BBC Radio Cornwall, Askey stated, “I just hope we can continue to progress.” He elaborated on his initial vision for the club, adding, “When I came in I said it was a project really that we’re all trying to further the club.” He concluded by reiterating his desire to contribute, saying, “I want to try to be a part of that, so it was flattering to be offered it.” In contrast to the previous season, when Truro contended with relegation and faced difficulties, including playing home matches first in Plymouth and then Gloucester due to an unfinished new ground, the club has seen significant improvement. This season, following their return to Truro, ‘the Tinners’ have drawn average home crowds of approximately 1,800. Under the guidance of the former Macclesfield Town, Port Vale, and York City boss, the team has secured victories in over half of its league fixtures. Askey further commented on the positive atmosphere, saying, “Things have improved, I feel, at the football club this year and there’s a really good feeling.” He expressed the team’s ambition: “We just want to try to keep it going.” Acknowledging future challenges, he added, “It’s going to be tough, We know we’re up against it but we’re enjoying it and the players have responded really well. Their attitude’s been first class right from the off.”
