Luke Williams has indicated he would maintain “always be half-interested” in acquiring Jamie Paterson, following the attacking midfielder’s departure from Charlotte FC. However, Williams clarified that numerous considerations would be necessary before Swansea City could contemplate pursuing their former player again, after his brief tenure in America. Paterson, aged 32, initially joined Charlotte in August, having been unable to finalize a new contract with Swansea after his previous agreement concluded in the summer. Earlier this month, the Major League Soccer club announced its decision not to exercise the option to extend Paterson’s short-term contract. Williams had previously expressed a clear desire to retain Paterson for the current season. Nevertheless, when questioned about a potential return for Paterson to Wales, Williams remarked: “I think he lost my number for a little while because we did make him an offer [in the summer] and I didn’t hear from him.” Williams further stated his admiration for Paterson, noting, “He is one of the players I admire and I enjoyed working with so much.” He also highlighted his significant role in Paterson’s initial arrival at the club, when Williams first joined as assistant to Russell Martin. Despite this, Williams acknowledged the complexities involved, stating: “There’s a lot to admire about Jamie Paterson, but it’s not probably as simple as phoning him up and inviting him in.” While Swansea has secured new players this season, including Eom Ji-Sung and Myles Peart-Harris, a fully fit and in-form Paterson could still contribute to Williams’ squad. Yet, under current circumstances, a return appears improbable. “We have to look at many things. Who knows, there’s always a chance in football,” Williams elaborated. He added, “I’d always be half-interested, but at the same time I have to make sure any decisions, any input I have… it has to be done in the most responsible way for the whole group and who we already have. Then there is the structure of the wages – there’s a lot.”
