Over a dozen individuals have been made redundant following the unexpected entry into administration of a charity. Approximately 15 employees of the Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation (GMCVO) reportedly lost their jobs on November 27. A spokesperson for the administrators, Opus Restructuring LLP, indicated that the organization, which included hundreds of local charities among its members, had encountered “significant financial difficulty.” He further stated that discussions were in progress to transfer certain segments of the charity to new operators, with the aim that existing staff might also transition. The GMCVO, supported by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), facilitated grants and research, serving as a membership body for hundreds of individual charities across the region. A spokeswoman for the GMCA expressed that it was “saddened to hear” of the financial struggles faced by one of “our key partners in the work to drive social and economic inclusion.” She added, “As we have funded and supported several projects with GMCVO, we are currently working with the administrators to explore options for the future of this work.” Emma Mifsud and Charles Turner, both from Opus Restructuring LLP, were appointed as joint administrators on November 27, 2024. According to a spokesperson, their appointment occurred after “significant potential historic liabilities unexpectedly came to light.” The spokesperson further explained that the charity had encountered financial difficulties, such as contract losses and reduced income, rendering it unsustainable. The administrators, tasked with presenting a plan for the GMCVO’s assets and services within eight weeks, affirmed their commitment to “minimising disruption to the community where possible.” Discussions regarding the transfer of some of the charity’s operations to new partners are continuing, with the expectation that affected employees might retain their positions. Additionally, the administrators have engaged independent human resources consultants to assist redundant staff members in filing compensation claims.
