A primary school in Croatia was the scene of a fatal stabbing where a seven-year-old child died and other children sustained injuries. The incident occurred when a man gained entry to the school and assaulted a teacher and students using a knife. On Friday, three children involved in the event in Zagreb, the Croatian capital, were transported to a hospital. Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic confirmed that their condition is now “out of danger”. Authorities apprehended the suspected attacker, a 19-year-old man who was a former pupil, in the vicinity of the school. He is currently receiving medical attention for injuries he inflicted upon himself. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic expressed that he was “horrified” by the occurrence at Precko Elementary School, situated in the western part of the city. Images captured at the location depicted police officers, ambulance personnel, and forensic teams positioned outside the school structure. Health Minister Irena Hrstic informed journalists gathered outside a children’s hospital that the assailant had gained entry to the school prior to stabbing both staff and pupils. She further stated that a total of five individuals were hospitalized subsequent to the event. Bozinovic mentioned that the suspect possessed a history of mental health problems and that law enforcement had “stopped him from committing suicide”. He also stated that the man initially escaped from the scene and barricaded himself within a room at a close-by health centre, prior to his apprehension. Parents present at the school described a state of panic as they sought to locate their children. Marko Palada conveyed to Reuters, “It’s disastrous that when I rushed into the school, I had no information regarding my child’s whereabouts, no one was willing to provide any details.” Croatia is scheduled to observe a national day of mourning on Saturday in response to the attack.
