An Israeli aerial assault on a five-story residential structure in Beit Lahia, situated in northern Gaza, has resulted in the deaths of at least 34 individuals, as stated by the local civil defense agency. The agency, cited by AFP, indicated that numerous casualties were women and children, with scores still believed to be trapped beneath the debris. Additionally, seven people sustained injuries. The Israeli military declared it had been targeting militant positions in northern Gaza, including Beit Lahia, with the aim of preventing Hamas from re-establishing its forces. Elsewhere, in central Gaza, three distinct assaults on refugee camps claimed the lives of 15 individuals, while an Israeli drone attack in Rafah, located in the south, caused five additional fatalities, the civil defense further reported. Civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal commented, “The chances of rescuing more wounded are decreasing because of the continuous shooting and artillery shelling.” The residential building in Beit Lahia is now reduced to a mound of rubble, with fractured concrete and jagged fragments of twisted metal protruding from the remains. One man, whose family resided in the demolished building but was staying elsewhere, conveyed, as quoted by AFP: “We all thought that death was near.” “The whole area was shaking.” The Israeli military stated that its operation in northern Gaza—which commenced in Jabalia and extended to Beit Lahia—involved multiple overnight strikes on what it termed “terrorist targets in the area.” It further mentioned in a communiqué that “there have been continuous efforts to evacuate the civilian population from the active war zone.” However, many local inhabitants are unwilling to abandon their residences. Mr. Bassel noted that six families had lived in the destroyed building in Beit Lahia. A woman from the vicinity expressed her exasperation to BBC News, asking, “What have we done to you people? What harm have we caused you? What wrong have we committed? We are staying in our homes. Why are you driving us out?” Last week, a strike on a dwelling in Jabalia led to the deaths of at least 25 people, among them 13 children. In Gaza City, five more individuals perished. Israel’s ground operation in northern Gaza has led to the displacement of up to 130,000 people over the preceding five weeks. The United Nations reports that 75,000 individuals remain under blockade with diminishing provisions of water and food in the towns of Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun. A report issued this week by Human Rights Watch asserted that Israel had perpetrated war crimes and crimes against humanity through the deliberate instigation of mass displacement among Palestinians in Gaza. Approximately 1.9 million people—representing 90% of Gaza’s populace—have departed their homes over the past year, and 79% of the territory is subject to Israeli-issued evacuation directives, according to the UN. Israel initiated a campaign to dismantle Hamas following the group’s unprecedented assault on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, an event in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken captive. Since that time, over 43,700 people have been killed in Gaza, based on figures from the territory’s Hamas-administered health ministry. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
