A neglected site, identified by councillors as an “anti-social hot spot,” has become the subject of maintenance concerns. This land, which is owned by the local council, functions as a primary entry point to the Stroud District and houses the historic Dudbridge Railway Station. For several months, local councillors have sought the removal of graffiti from the heritage wall of the old Dudbridge Station. However, Gloucestershire County Council stated its policy is to only remove graffiti considered “offensive.” Green district councillor Steve Hyndside commented, “This site should be welcoming but feels abandoned.” He further noted that while local residents undertook clearing and repainting of the area next to Sainsbury’s in Stroud last year, fundamental site upkeep ought not to be their responsibility. Beyond the graffiti on the historic station wall, the site exhibits a poor state of repair, featuring broken benches, a damaged fence, overgrown ivy, and a soiled bin. Labour county councillor Steve Robinson remarked, “This site should be regularly maintained, but it’s in disrepair. It’s an anti-social hotspot that needs attention.” Green councillor Gill Thomas, who serves as Stroud District Council’s litter champion, also inspected the location and suggested that its neglect could contribute to a rise in anti-social behaviour. Ms. Thomas drew attention to the district’s initiatives employing nature-friendly approaches to address tagging problems, including the planting of hedgerows along canals to safeguard walls. “Across the district, we are pioneering nature-friendly solutions to addressing issues around tagging,” Ms Thomas said. “Along the canals for example we’re planting hedgerows to protect walls that can also offer crucial habitats, but we know there isn’t a one-size solution for every site.” Councillors are appealing to local businesses possessing the means to aid in graffiti removal to get in touch, and they are also seeking volunteers to assist in tidying the area.
