A new candidate has joined the race for the leadership of Nottinghamshire County Council, just before Sunday’s deadline. Ben Bradley, the current leader of the Conservative-led council, previously announced his intention to step down in December following what he described as a “challenging” year and two election defeats. Richard Jackson, who serves as the cabinet member for finance, indicated that fellow councillors encouraged him to seek the leadership. Sam Smith, the cabinet member for education and special educational needs and disabilities, submitted his candidacy for the leadership earlier in November. The BBC also reports that Neil Clarke, the cabinet member for transport and environment, is among the contenders. In May, Mr. Bradley was defeated by Labour’s Claire Ward in the election to become the inaugural mayor of the East Midlands. Subsequently, in July’s general election, he lost his Mansfield MP seat to Labour’s Steve Yemm. Mr. Bradley is scheduled to remain in the leader’s role until 4 December. Nevertheless, he is a prospective candidate for the Conservative nomination for Lincolnshire mayor. Mr. Jackson, a native of Chilwell, previously served as the leader of Broxtowe Borough Council from 2015 to 2019. “I’ve had several colleagues ask me to put myself forward,” he informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service on Friday. Mr. Smith, aged 27, who represents Trent Valley on Gedling Borough Council and Newark East for the county council, submitted his leadership candidacy earlier in November. He expressed his ambition to become one of the youngest leaders nationwide. The Conservative group within the council is set to choose its new leader this upcoming week, prior to the council’s formal appointment of an authority leader at its next meeting on 5 December.
