North Norfolk District Council has decided against the sale of over 400 beach huts and chalets. Council officers had previously suggested selling these properties, located in Cromer, Mundesley, Sheringham, and Overstrand, on long leaseholds as a fundraising strategy. Alternative proposals involved offering the management of these units to private companies via leases. Lucy Shires, the cabinet member responsible for finance, estates, and property services within the Liberal Democrat-controlled council, expressed concerns, stating there were “too many unknowns.” The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that during a cabinet meeting, councillors ultimately voted against pursuing these proposed options. Although the beach huts will not be sold, 33 units currently available for weekly rental will be converted into five-year leases. The council indicated this change aims to address the significant demand for extended rentals, given that over 900 individuals are on waiting lists. Liz Withington, the cabinet member for leisure, commented, “I really welcome this and people in Sheringham, who have been on the list for 14 years, will do as well.” Suggestions were made to prioritize local residents for the new long-term leases. However, this was rejected by Lib Dem council leader Tim Adams, who stated: “Opening these additional units gives everyone [on the list] a bit more advantage of securing one of these leases.” Future leaseholders of the beach huts should anticipate higher costs. Shires mentioned that officers are considering increasing the rates, with a potential rise of approximately 14% being discussed. Currently, the annual starting cost for a five-year beach hut lease within the council district is £913.74.
