An individual from Jersey has been sentenced to 16 years and six months in prison following convictions for child sexual abuse and the possession of indecent images of children. Richard Louis Romeril, aged 49, was convicted by Jersey’s Royal Court in June on 10 counts of sexual offences. These included the abuse of a girl over a 10-year span, commencing when she was four years old. Additionally, he admitted guilt to four further charges concerning the creation of indecent and prohibited images of children. According to defence advocate Mike Preston, Romeril had experienced depression, was addicted to pornography, and was seeking treatment for these conditions. The court was informed that during his initial questioning by police, he denied both abusing the girl and possessing indecent images. Crown advocate Emma Hollywood characterized his criminal acts as “a prolonged campaign of sexual assault.” It was also disclosed in court that he possessed thousands of images and videos depicting child sexual abuse, some of which were of the gravest kind. Following the sentencing, Det Con Sian Dupre of the States of Jersey Police stated: “The sentence handed to Richard Romeril today reflects the gravity of his crimes and their profound impact. We want to recognise the extraordinary bravery of the survivor, who courageously came forward to make the complaint. Their remarkable strength and resilience have been pivotal in bringing Romeril to justice. It is our sincere hope that this sentence will provide them with a sense of justice and contribute to their healing journey.”
